International Bachelor in Data Science



This Bachelor program in Data Science is 100% taught in English. The teaching units primarily concern Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Statistics and Programming. This innovative combines a demanding academic teaching with a project-based pedagogy and the use of blended learning. The Bachelor's degree trains future international engineers in the fields of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence who will be capable of evolving in both English and French-speaking environments and who are open to the complexity of the world.


Projects play an important role in the teaching methodology. They tackle issues in a wide range of domains and allow students to work in teams but also to deepen or learn concepts. Students work on company-oriented assignments during the third and the fourth academic year. They are trained to apply the Design Methodology in order to identify problems, observe the situations, imagine all the potential solutions and finally shape and deliver a reasonable outcome. The Design Methodology approach is achieved thanks to the collaboration of CY école de design.

These outcomes turn out to be complex tasks because they require a mastery of not only highly specialized mathematical and computer skills, but also needing to call on different types of knowledge, methods and design tools, in order to put them at the service of each and every one of us.
It is the goal of the International Bachelor's Degree "Data Science by Design" to give you this double mastery.

Problems and opportunities are everywhere, and they need to be both identified and resolved.

Becoming a Data Scientist and being able to unleash the power of data requires a broad investment in major areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Statistics and Programming. Data Scientists also need to be thinking of how to integrate cutting edge technologies, including Quantum Computing.

To prepare you for this international reality, you start your program in France for 2 years, and continue during your third academic year while studying abroad a whole semester in a European or a non-European partner university, which will, without any doubt, enhance your intercultural and linguistic skills.

Syllabus | International Bachelor in Data Sciences

2/3 of the program is dedicated to disciplinary courses related to Data Science: Computer science (Python, R, C, Java), Mathematics, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine and Deep Learning, Database, Data Mining.

In addition to technical and theoretical classes in Data Science, students will have the opportunity to discover various academic fields that will be relevant to their future professional environment: Economics, Marketing, Project Management.

The last third of the program is devoted to projects. Every year students will carry out:

  • 2 major assignments (of a duration of 15 weeks);
  • 2 minor projects (1-week project)

Classes in the Humanities’ course unit will be offered to focus on the fields of Sociology, Ethnography, Ecology in order to better understand the world and society in which we all live.

Lectures delivered by professionals and researchers complete the syllabus.
A French as a Foreign Language course program is offered to international students.
The program includes mandatory internships and is worth 240 ECTS.

Admission Criteria
  • Strong academic skills in High School, especially in Mathematics and Science.
    French Baccalauréat; grade “TB/B”, Specialization in Mathematics, Physics, Digital and Computer Science, Science of Engineering

  • Secondary Education Diploma enabling access to a university.
  • Swiss secondary education “maturité”certificate, European high school certificate, or equivalent.
  • English proficiency level CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for languages): B2 preferably proven via an official external exam test score: TOEIC 800, IELTS 6.0, IBT TOEFL 80.
  • Documents required :
    Application form;

    ○ Copies of transcripts of records concerning the last two years of studies;
    ○ English proficiency level (expect for native students or students who can prove having followed an English-taught program);
    ○ A letter of interest showing the applicant’s strong interest in Data Science.
 

Selection process

  • Applications open at Year 2 level: one year of studies at Higher Education level duly completed in the field of Data Science or Computer Science with good grades in Mathematics and Computer Science;
  • Applications open at Year 3 level: two years of studies at Higher Education level duly completed in the field of Data Science or Computer Science with good grades in Mathematics and Computer Science.


Once the application file is administered, the applicant may be asked to do a test in mathematics which will lead or not to a face-to-face, telephone or Skype interview. Successful interviewees will receive an unconditional offer letter.

Diploma Recognition

After four years of study, students will graduate from a BSc. Hons. Bachelor’s in Data Science by Design from CY Tech Cergy Paris University and a Design Thinking Certification from CY école de design.
With just one more year of studies, students can obtain the 5-year Engineering diploma from CY Tech Grande Ecole or a Master’s in Data Science.
Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for one academic year of the Bachelor’s program are 5.000 € for European students and 10.000 € for non-European students.
50% of the tuition fees will have to be settled for successful candidates in addition to administrative fees.

Example of a Project

A Data Science assignment can be structured in 5 steps:

  • Gathering: gather data from the relevant data sources
  • Scrubbing: preprocess data to clean format that machine understands
  • Exploring: find significant patterns and trends using statistical methods
  • Modelling: build and train models to predict and forecast
  • Interpreting: put results into good uses
Example of a project:
When someone writes a sentence, NLP algorithms decompose the sentence to highlight the grammatical points, as if there were an incorrect pronoun in the sentence. The target language is either French or English. Students set up an app that automatically creates exercises where the learners must identify parts of speech within the sentence structure.

Valérie Nachef 
has a PhD Thesis from Paris 6 University and an Habilitation thesis from the University of Cergy-Pontoise. She is Associate Professor in Mathematics at CY Cergy Paris Université. her research domain is cryptography. She published articles in many international conferences and she is also the co-author of a book in private key cryptography. During several years, she was Deputy Vice-President for International Relations at the University of Cergy-Pontoise. She is now the director of the International Bachelor Y Data Science by Design

Elian Masnada
 (vice-director of the programme) graduated at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon in 2006. He then got his Ph.D from University of Lyon in 2009 in statistical physics applied to soft matter. After this, he did, in the same field, a postdoc with Pr. Jean-Louis Barrat at the University of Grenoble (supported by Michelin) and, in 2014, he got a position at Georgetown University (Washington DC) in the Group of Peter Olmsted where he was working on the Navier-Stokes equation applied to viscoelastic fluids. Since 2020, he is now working on statistical physics applied to soft matter at the LPPI (CY Cergy Paris Université).

Dr. Matthieu Cisel has a background in Data Science in the fields of Ecological Modeling and Education Data Mining. During his PhD at ENS Paris-Saclay, he worked on the topics of disengagement in MOOCs through the lens of learning analytics. As a post-doctoral fellow in Université Paris-Descartes, he specialised in the field of learning environment design. In the Bachelor, he is in charge of the Project Learning Unit. In this unit, students are asked to develop learning apps based on artificial intelligence. He also teaches some basic methods in the field of statistics. In addition to these responsibilities, he is involved in the design of strategies to help digitalise the curricula.

Constanza Rojas-Molina
  obtained a PhD in mathematical physics at the Universite de Cergy-Pontoise (currently CY Cergy Paris Université). She did a 2-year postdoc at the Analysis Group of the University of Munich, (LMU) thanks to a Marie Curie Fellowship. This was followed by 2,5 years at the University of Bonn as a postdoc in the Probability Group, before obtaining a Junior-Professor position in Stochastics at the University of Düsseldorf. After one year in Düsseldorf, she came back to France to become part of the recently created International Bachelor Ygrec at CY Cergy Paris Université. Her research focuses on the theory of random Schrödinger operators, a field of mathematical-physics that combines functional analysis, probability and physics.

Dr T. Manos
 has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, University of Patras, Greece. His PhD thesis is on Applied Mathematics and Physics co-directed by the Department of Physics, Université d’Aix-Marseille I (France) and Department of Mathematics, University of Patras (Greece). After obtaining his PhD, he has worked as post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden (Germany), University of Florence (Italy), University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia), University of Maribor (Slovenia) and as a senior researcher at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-7) at the Research Centre Jülich (Germany). Since September 2019, he has been working as Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modélisation (LPTM) of CNRS, CY Cergy Paris Université (France). He is a lecturer and project supervisor at the “International Bachelor Ygrec"

Marcus Pivato
 is a professor in the research unit "Théorie Economique, Modélisation et Applications" at CY Paris Université. His main research interests are collective decision-making, social welfare, and normative economics. Earlier in his career he also studied cellular automata and other dynamical systems. He has published more than 50 academic research articles in theoretical economics, mathematics, and philosophy, as well as a textbook on linear partial differential equations and Fourier theory, and he is on the editorial boards of five journals. From 2014 until 2018, he held the Labex MME-DII Chaire d'Excellence at CY Paris Université. He received his B.Sc. in Mathematics in 1994 from the University of Alberta, and his PhD. in Mathematics in 2001 from the University of Toronto.

Emilie Dupont  passed her PhD in theoretical physics in December 2006 at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec (Canada).  She teaches physics at CY Tech and in the Bachelor program

Yérali Gandica hold a degree in Physics from the Universidad Simón Bolívar (Caracas-Venezuela) and a PhD in Physics from the Venezuelan Institute for Research (IVIC).She spent 7 years among 4 Postdoctoral positions in Europe.  As a second academic formation, Yérali has complemented her PhD following several courses on Sociology (the first three years of this major). She also has a broad experience working in computational social science, Big Data and network science among several interdisciplinary groups (mathematics, finance, geography, engineering and biology).

Stefan Bornhofen
 studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Mainz, Germany, and obtained a PhD in Computer Science from Paris-Sud University, France, in 2008. He holds a teaching and research position at CY Tech engineering school in Cergy near Paris, and is the head of the last-year option "Visual Computing" specializing in computer graphics, computer vision and human-computer interaction.

Laurent Cervoni is Director of Research and Innovation of the Talan Group (ESN with 3,300 employees). Engineer of the “École Supérieure d’Ingénieurs en Électronique et Électrotechnique” (ESIEE), Doctor in Computer Science of the University of Rouen (Artificial Intelligence), Laurent Cervoni began his career in service companies (especially in Artificial Intelligence) before creating and running his own consulting firm for 18 years. He has worked on projects in both “Connectionist AI" (artificial neural networks, Machine Learning) and "Symbolic AI" (Knowledge Base Systems, Logic Programming). He contributed to the ISO standardization of the Prolog language. He was a ministerial adviser (State Secretariat for Victim Assistance) before being CEO of Docaposte Localeo (La Poste group), a software publisher involved in the modernization of public action. He was Director of Artificial Intelligence at Talan Consulting for a year before taking over as Group Research Director. He is also a member of the Coordination of the Association of Doctors of France (ANDès) since 2015 and of the Board of Directors of the Regional Institute of Sports and Health Medicine in Normandy. He leads the Scientific Committee of ActuIA, a journal specializing in Artificial Intelligence.

HACKATHON CHALLENGE

I was part of the Hackathon with other students..

Our goal was to make computations on 3D objects, to find the characteristics of each piece, and then to implement our algorithms and results into a homemade interface using Flask and Python. The challenge was hard because it is very different compared to what we usually do in class or projects, but it only made it more interesting!

The general mood was very pleasing, as the organizers and the speaker were very kind and helping. They were coming to check on us every two hours approximately, which was perfect to get new ideas and ways to perform some tasks. Every two or three hours, we also had a meeting with everyone where we had to present our breakthrough of the last hours.

I think that we did well. Overall it was a good experience and I would be glad to do it again in the future, even if working 10 hours straight leads to fatigue but challenge was worth it !


CONTEMPORARY ISSUE MODULE

During this week we saw two fields of Data Science, techniques for Big Data using Bash script and on the other side Agent Based Model with python. Coding in Bash allows us to analyse huge dataset (we are talking about more than 1Go files). We also saw the basics of Agent Based Model (Axelrod, Boundary confidence) and how to modelized them using Python. The goal was either to achieve a big data analysis using Bash script on a subject we choose, or to modelized the Schelling model for segregation in Python. The subject I choose was to modelized the Schelling model for segregation.


CONTEMPORARY ISSUE MODULE

1st year Bachelor students had to work in group during a week in order to produce a presentation with Data analysis.

FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Foreign students have French classes every week. This week it was ‘Chandeleur’ in France (pancake day). Students learnt cooking vocabulary while cooking and eating crepes!
